Het melkkoetje. Door onbekende Engelse schilder. Omstreeks 1585.<BR />Na de afzwering van de Spaanse koning in 1581 probeerden de opstandige provincies meer dan ooit buitenlandse steun te vinden. Tevoren hadden zij de souvereiniteit aangeboden aan de hertog van Anjou, zoon van Hendrik II van Frankrijk: dit experiment mislukte. Daarop werd in 1585 een overeenkomst gesloten met koningin Elisabeth van Engeland. Zij zond geld en troepen onder de Graaf van Leicester. Ook deze politiek mislukte. <BR />De koe, die de opstandige gewesten verbeeldt, wordt door Philips II bereden. Hij geeft haar tot bloedens toe de sporen. De Prins van Oranje melkt de koe uit, terwijl Anjou haar aan de staart trekt. Koningin Elisabeth voedert het beest, dat bij de hoorns wordt gevat door de deputatie uit de Staten-Generaal, die op 20 augustus 1585 de overeenkomst met Engeland sloot.
