Jan Mijtens (ca. 1614 - 1670). Portrait of Cornelis Tromp, 1668. The Lieutenant-admiral general, Cornelis Tromp (1629 - 1691), sea hero and son of the even more illustrious sea hero Maerten Harpertsz Tromp, took part in all three Anglo-Dutch Sea Wars fought between 1652 and 1674. The portrait contains various references to his function with the fleet: the Dutch Lion on his chest, the sword at his left side, and the painted ship in the background. The latter attribute is of particular interest, since Tromp had already resigned from the navy, after a conflict with Admiraal Michiel de Ruyter and a missed promotion. This portrait, the work of the Hague painter Jan Mijtens, is an example of the elegant courtly style that was fashionable at the time, under the influence of the Flemish artist Anthonie van Dijck. Purchase 1803.
