Koningin Henrietta Maria, vrouw van Karel I van Engeland bezocht de Republiek in 1642-1643. Aanleiding was de aflevering van haar dochtertje Mary Stuart die kort tevoren als 10-jarig meisje was getrouwd met de 15-jarige prins Willem II. Tegelijkertijd echter trachtte zij geldelijke steun te verkrijgen op onderpand van de kroonjuwelen voor de Engelse strijd die de koning tegen het Engelse parlement voerde.<BR />Frederik Hendrik steunde de koning; de Staten-Generaal het parlement. <BR />De hier afgebeelde scene was ontworpen als één der tableaux vivants bij de ontvangst van de koningin in Amsterdam. Hier wordt Frederik Hendrik (Perseus) belaagd door de vuurspuwende Spaanse tirannie, waarvan hij de Nederlanden (Andromeda) wist te bevrijden.<BR />Dit tafereel zou geplaatst worden in het Damrak. Omdat de koningin over land de stad binnenkwam, werd het nooit uitgevoerd.
